Saint Gilbert Cross Country Scores A Trifecta & Quinfecta

Saint Gilbert started the Cross Country season with a conference meet held at Adler Park in Libertyville, Illinois. With school officially in session the team was at full strength as it started the march to the Conference Finals in early October. Cross Country is a truly team event, where the entire Cross Country Squad, from 5th to 8th graders train and travel together. The Junior Varsity teams of 5th and 6th graders run one mile and then their older teammates in Varsity run 2 miles thereafter. Another aspect that makes Cross Country a big family is that in many races, the boys and girls run together, though they are scored separately.

Despite (or perhaps because of) unseasonably chilly temperatures, the Runnin’ Rebels were red hot. Beginning with a prayer, the team was set to compete. After all the runners from all the schools crossed the finish line, SGS scored a trifecta, nearly a clean sweep: Varsity Girls, Varsity Boys and the Junior Varsity Boys took first place against five other schools. Even more, the Varsity boys scored a rare feat – a quinfecta – SGS runners took first, second, third, fourth and fifth place – a perfect score in Cross Country. Not only that, the varsity runners accounted for eight of the top ten runners. The Varsity girls were not far behind, with girls taking first and second, and four out of the top six spots For the JV boys, 6 of the top 10 runners were from SGS. Finally, even though the JV girls did not take first, they took second place, they only were down by 3 points.

However, the Runnin’ Rebels cannot get complacent. Not only are there three more meets, but St. Patrick and the Lake Forest Country Day School did not participate. SGS hasn’t forgotten that St. Patrick and Saint Gilbert tied for first place in the conference last year. In reflecting on the meet, Coach Day commented, “it was a great start to the season! The 3 coaches are really proud of all of our runners, especially since it was a first race for some of them."
