Saint Gilbert Starts the School Year Even Before It Actually Starts

Saint Gilbert started off the school year with a bang - three events over the weekend, even though school didn’t official start until Monday! First, the SGS Boys and Girls Cross Country Team competed Saturday afternoon at the Saint Viator Invitational, in Arlington Heights, Illinois. At nearly the same time, Saint Gilbert School continued its tradition of taking part in the Grayslake Days Parade, marching as a school, handing out candy, waves and friendly smiles to the community. Then, on Sunday, the school hosted its annual “Popsicles in the Playground” event, which welcomes Pre-K and Kindergarten families to the school, allowing the kids to meet each other and their teachers in a friendly and fun setting.

The school looks forward to a great year after a strong 2016-17. Last year, three teachers were accorded awards by independent organizations: Mrs. Diane Dolan by the Grayslake VFW as Teacher of the Year, Ms. Dana Bishop garnered recognition for her school garden project, the produce of which is donated to a local food pantry and Mrs. Kristine Buckley, as an Outstanding Economic Educator by Econ Illinois.

Overall, the school, once again, scored above the national average in test results which is reflected in the school’s success in academic competitions. The school’s Robotics Club in their inaugural year, took won the programing award at the annual 4-H Competition. Its Math Team was also successful – the 7th Grade team won the Carmel High School Math competition and placed 1st, 2nd and 4th place at the Woodlands competition. Meanwhile, our 8th graders won the US Crystal Growing Contest.

In sports, where teams from 5th to 8th grade compete, the boys and girls, took on their new conference with style, winning the conference in Cross Country, Basketball, Track and Volleyball among the different grade levels.
