Embracing the challenges of completing their classes outside of the physical classrooms at College of Lake County, 1,766 graduating students celebrate their achievements this spring. Alternative learning may have been the ultimate test of adaptability to pass this semester, but after many weeks of flexible coursework the class of 2020 knows they exceeded expectations with nearly 2,000 degrees and certificates awarded.

“This graduating class was born in the shadow of a historic life-changing event, lived through a technological revolution and has now graduated in the midst of a pandemic,” said former student trustee Alexa Waheed ‘20. “Through our accomplishments, milestones, and relationships, we have built our own CLC experience. The Class of 2020 can overcome anything and everything.”

In the face of adversity, these students persevered during the alternative delivery model due to COVID- 19's stay at home order. CLC united in sharing motivational video messages, encouraging students to achieve their educational goals despite disruption. College faculty and staff contributed more than 100 videos about keeping inspired, motivated and finishing strong.

Shared in Facebook posts, tweets and emails, these video messages demonstrate all the ways CLC is more than a physical campus. The college is a strong community built of people – Lancers – who strive to provide an equitable education accessible to everyone who wants to learn. The class of 2020 has proven that while our buildings may be physically empty, the college is full of bright minds and determined students who will still reach the finish line despite the many challenges in their path.

Based on student feedback, the college will gather with all the pomp and circumstance the class of 2020 deserves with a traditional ceremony in December.
