SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Sam Yingling, D – Grayslake, advanced a measure – brought to him by local Grayslake high school student Abby Goldberg – out of the House Environment Committee on Wednesday designating April as “Bring Your Own Bag Month” as a way to encourage consumers to use reusable shopping bags.
“It is very inspiring to see students, like Abby, getting involved in the legislative process,” Yingling said. “It is a tremendous honor to work with Abby on her environmentally friendly initiative and to welcome her to legislative committee in Springfield.”

House Resolution 39 is a part of Abby’s efforts to spread awareness about the importance of people using recyclable bags when shopping. The measure was brought to Yingling’s attention by her grassroots lobbying and passed out of committee with bipartisan support. It will now be considered by the full House.
