GRAYSLAKE, Ill. - State Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, backed a measure on Tuesday that would restore financial aid for students across the state.

“We must not let our hard-working students be a continued causality in the disagreement over the budget,” Yingling said. “This critical appropriation will restore funding for grants to help students offset the high costs associated with attending an institute of higher learning."

Yingling supported House Bill 4167, which passed in the House Tuesday. The measure would restore funding to the Illinois Student Assistance Commission’s Monetary Award Program (MAP) grants. The MAP grant is available to Illinois students who wish to attend college but who may not have all the necessary means to afford the cost of tuition or supplies like text books. Though some money for MAP grants was appropriated under Senate Bill 2059, the funds released were not enough to cover all MAP grants for Illinois students. The measure to fund the remaining MAP grants now awaits consideration in the Senate.

“Through my Advisory Committee on Education as well as the dozens of conversations I have shared with academic professionals from across my district, I understand how important these MAP grants are to students and universities,” Yingling said. “Funding these grants is an investment in the financial future of our state, helping students attend college in Illinois and go on to get a well-paying job upon graduation, and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to quickly pass this bill and provide much-needed funding for our young people."

Yingling represents the 62nd District, which contains portions of Gages Lake, Grayslake, Hainesville, the Round Lake communities, Wauconda and Wildwood.
