SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Commemorating the month of October, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D- Grayslake, is working to propel domestic violence issues to the frontlines of state policy.
“Domestic Violence Awareness Month raises awareness about this very prevailing issue,” said Yingling. “We should be doing more in Springfield to create change that puts offenders on notice, and that is why I am supporting legislative efforts to help victims of domestic violence.”
This year, Yingling supported a number of measures devoted to helping domestic violence victims. He voted for House Bill 1121, which allows crime victims to testify at post-arraignment court proceedings and have their safety and the safety of their family considered when courts consider whether or not to release a defendant.
Yingling also backed Senate Bill 1645, which provides victims with additional time to pay utility service dues and fees when they are moving out of a dangerous living situation. In addition, he also voted for Senate Bill 1547, a bill that protects those who frequent calls to the police about domestic or sexual violence from any legal implications.
All three bills are now law.
“There is incredible value in Domestic Violence Awareness Month,” said Yingling. “That being said, it can be a challenge to transition the support victims receive during that month to the rest of the year. These domestic violence laws protect victims yearlong, not just in October. I am so proud of the positive steps we have taken this year, and look forward to supporting similar legislation in the future.”
