SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – As Illinoisans remember the work of America’s veterans this month, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D- Grayslake, is working to propel veteran’s issues to the front lines of Illinois policy.

“We owe our safety and the safety of our children to the sacrifices made by veterans and their families,” Yingling said. “They risked their lives for us, and I want to make sure that when they come back home to Illinois as civilians, they are treated like the heroes they are.”

Yingling is most proud of his efforts to pass a new law providing property tax relief to disabled veterans. House Bill 107, now law, allows more veterans to qualify for property tax exemption programs and does not penalize veterans who have had to make improvements to their homes, such as ramp ways and grab bars, with a higher assessment because of those improvements. Yingling also sponsored House Bill 3122, a bill that provides honorably discharged veterans and their widows or widowers with preferred employment, and House Bill 159, which would give property tax relief to veterans who face possible foreclosures.

“According to the National Coalition of Homeless Veterans, almost 50,000 U.S. veterans are homeless on any given night,” Yingling said. “These are men and women who have gone into potentially deadly situations to protect our country, and who are rarely taken care of when they return. We have the opportunity in Illinois to correct this injustice through legislation, and I am working hard to do my part to say ‘thank you’.”
