GRAYSLAKE, Ill. – December is National Safe Toys and Gifts Awareness Month, and state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, is reminding area residents to be careful and avoid buying toys or presents that may be dangerous.

“The holidays are about joyous celebrations and creating timeless memories with our friends and family, but it is important we all take some quick and easy steps to ensure a safe and happy holiday season,” Yingling said. “By following some basic safety tips and using available resources, shoppers can avoid products that may be hazardous.”

Yingling says that one such resource is Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s annual Safe Shopping Guide of recalled toys and gifts. The guide, available at http://www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/consumers/2015_Safe_Shopping_Guide.pdf, lists all toys recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which estimates at least 256,000 toy related injuries in 2013. Yingling also recommends that parents check the annual list of other potentially dangerous toys published by the U.S. Public Research Interest Group at ToySafetyTips.org.

“If shoppers are uncertain whether a particular item is suitable for children or possibly dangerous, they should carefully study the packaging or ask an employee,” Yingling continued.

“The best resource for parents is common sense in avoiding toys with moving or small parts, or toys and presents that have other hazards to small children to help reduce the risk of toy related injuries during the holiday season.”

Yingling represents the 62nd District, which contains portions of Gages Lake, Grayslake, Gurnee, Hainesville, the Round Lake communities, Wauconda and Wildwood.
