In Illinois, banks and business are required to turn over unclaimed property to the Treasurer’s office if they are unable to find the rightful owner after five years. Unclaimed property can include: abandoned saving and checking accounts, safe deposit boxes, unclaimed apartment security deposits, items mistakenly mailed to a former address or returned, and unclaimed property or assets from a loved one.
