SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Money collected through motor fuel taxes, video gaming, 9-1-1 surcharges and other fees owed to local cities and critical social service agencies is one step closer to being distributed under recently passed legislation championed by state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake.
“Under this proposal, which received strong bipartisan support, we can provide some stability to the services and programs many Illinoisans rely upon,” Yingling said. “Our local municipalities, first responders, seniors, and victims of domestic abuse must not continue to pay the price for the governor’s budget impasse, and this measure will free up the money that can legally not be spent on anything except what it was reserved for.”
Yingling backed Senate Bill 2039, which provides local municipalities with the funds that are intended to receive from gaming operations and other taxes. Without the appropriation from the state, they could not have accessed the money. The legislation paved the way for funding important programs local and state public safety officials rely upon and appropriating funding for services that help victims of domestic abuse.
The proposals also supplements LIHEAP, a program that assists qualifying seniors to heat their homes. Senate Bill 2039 passed in the House with overwhelming bi-partisan support and awaits action in the Senate.
“Our state remains troubled by years of financial negligence and is still without a budget,” Yingling said. “I pledge to continue working with all members of the General Assembly to create a responsible budget that eliminates waste while preserving important programs that support and strengthen our state’s middle class.”
Yingling represents the 62nd District, which contains portions of Gages Lake, Grayslake, Gurnee, Hainesville, the Round Lake communities, Wauconda and Wildwood.
