GRAYSLAKE, Ill – As the internet becomes even more ubiquitous through wearables like smart watches and fitness trackers, keeping our data secure is becoming ever more challenging. Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, is encouraging residents to take a proactive approach to boost their cyber security knowledge during October’s National Cyber Security Awareness Month.

“For many of us, the web is a source for unlimited consumer opportunities, services, and a way to stay in touch with friends and family, but we must take safe guards to protect our valuable data,” Yingling said. “Taking simple steps like setting unique and strong passwords, using two-factor authentication and regularly reviewing your privacy settings are simple ways to make it harder for thieves to disrupt your life and finances.”

Yingling is also suggesting that people exercise extreme caution when opening any email or MMS attachments from unfamiliar sources or people. Even smartphones and watches are susceptible to malware. Additionally, he advises residents to use common sense about any offers that seem too good to be true and to never share their passwords.

“Our residents don’t want to go through the headache and financial pain of having their identity stolen. That’s why I worked closely with the Attorney General’s Office to pass tougher cybercrime laws, provide Identify Theft Seminars and free community-based Shred Days,” Yingling said. “I encourage more people to learn about more ways they can protect themselves by visiting www.Ready.Illinois.Gov.”

Yingling represents the 62nd District, which contains portions of Gages Lake, Grayslake, Hainesville, the Round Lake communities, Wauconda and Wildwood.
