GRAYSLAKE, Ill. – People who pretend to be veterans or military personnel in order to receive benefits or discounts could face stricter punishments under a new proposal backed by state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake.
“With Memorial Day around the corner, this legislation may provide a powerful deterrent to those committing the crime of impersonating a military veteran,” Yingling said. “Posing as a service member in the hopes of bettering oneself economically is a despicable act and insult to the real men and women who serve in our Armed Forces.”
Yingling is a House sponsor of Senate Bill 2167. The measure, which passed with overwhelming Republican and Democrat support in the State Senate, would apply to anyone committing a false personation of a former service, reserves, or National Guard member. Violators would pay a sizable fine.
“It is my duty as a legislator to serve those who have faithfully served and protected our freedoms,” Yingling said. “I will continue to advocate on behalf of our military heroes, past and present, to make sure they are treated properly under the law, and those that scam them are fully brought to justice.”
Yingling represents the 62nd District, which contains portions of Gages Lake, Grayslake, Gurnee, Hainesville, the Round Lake communities, Wauconda and Wildwood.
