GRAYSLAKE, Ill. – State Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, expressed deep disappointment as legislators failed to garner enough votes to fund the Monetary Assistance Program, which provides financial aid to thousands of college students, and provide funding for community colleges throughout the state. Yingling voted in support of the funding.
“College is more expensive than ever, and we need to fix that, but in the meantime, there are incredibly bright students in our communities who would be successful in college, but simply can’t afford it on their own while working and going to school.” Yingling continued, “The governor’s veto of this important funding and the failure of the legislature to override the veto is a major blow to the pursuit of a higher education for thousands. I hope that all sides can put aside their difference and do what is right for the students we serve.”
The vetoed bill also provides dollars for community colleges, career and technical education, and adult literacy programs.
“As I have said time and time again, I remain ready to work with the Governor and my colleagues in the House, but I will always fight for what’s right and fair. It is wrong to rob these working class kids an education in a game of political brinkmanship to break the middle class.”
Yingling represents the 62nd District, which contains portions of Gages Lake, Grayslake, Hainesville, the Round Lake communities, Wauconda and Wildwood.
