SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, stood with Republican and Democrat legislators in supporting a measure to bring awareness to ovarian cancer and the need to provide funding for preventative women’s healthcare screenings.

“Deadly diseases do not differentiate between political parties and can affect anyone at any given time,” Yingling said. “We must set aside our political differences and stand united in the war against cancer."

Every year, 15,000 women die from ovarian cancer. As funding for cancer screenings continue to be cut by Governor Rauner, numerous people are worried women will not have access to critical services meant to catch the disease until it is too late. Every year, more than 20,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Of these diagnoses, over 75 percent are not found until the cancer has already reached an advanced state. Women who develop ovarian cancer have a much better survival rate if the disease is diagnosed early. However, the longer the delay to diagnose, the smaller the likelihood of survival. Yingling backed House Resolution 993. The measure calls attention to ovarian cancer by declaring the week of September 11th through the 17th as “Ovarian Cyst Awareness Week” in Illinois.

“As Illinois continues to operate with no real budget, programs that help women prevent cancer continue to suffer,” Yingling said. “For far too long, obstructionists have held up the budget making process and it’s time to put an end to the budget charades and fully fund programs that can help prevent cancer and save lives.”

Yingling represents the 62nd District, which contains portions of Gages Lake, Grayslake, Hainesville, the Round Lake communities, Wauconda and Wildwood.
