GRAYSLAKE, Ill. – Coming off his recent wins of passing government consolidation legislation and measures to provide property tax relief, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, delivered for the taxpayers again by recently passing legislation to eliminate the position of Illinois’ Lieutenant Governor.
“After passing legislation that allows voters to consolidate government and freeze property taxes, it is critical the legislature keep the momentum going if we are to put our state back on the path to financial solvency,” Yingling said. “By doing away with more layers of government like the Lt. Governor’s office, we can save our state even more money by freeing up resources and other costs associated with running a bureaucracy.”
Currently, the lieutenant governor is charged with duties assigned by the governor, and should a vacancy occur, is the successor to the governor. House Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 5 removes the lieutenant governor from the Executive branch, and makes the attorney general the successor to the governor. If approved by the Senate, Illinoisians would vote on the measure in November.
Yingling represents the 62nd District, which contains portions of Gages Lake, Grayslake, Gurnee, Hainesville, the Round Lake communities, Wauconda and Wildwood.
