Amy Morton's New Speakeasy 1898 Open Now In Highland Park: Report

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — Highland Park has a new late-night option. Amy Morton's newest project 1898 Speakeasy is a 25-seat cocktail hideaway and private event space tucked down a cobblestone alley near the restaurant’s main dining room.

According to a report from Chicago Food Magazine, The new concept follows just months after the opening of The Barn Steakhouse Highland Park. According to the magazine, the name 1898 comes from the building’s original address and also marks the year the structure was completed. The space draws on Prohibition-era Chicago and Morton’s family history.

Food centers on a domestic caviar service with paddlefish for $45, hackleback for $70 and Siberian for $120, each served with tater tots and crème fraîche. The menu also includes salted nuts and olives, mezze, butter-poached lobster rolls, rotating artisanal cheeses and seasonal sweets.

A private room behind the main bar is designed for cocktail receptions, intimate celebrations and corporate gatherings. The space can accommodate about 60 seated guests or 80 standing, and private event bookings will begin this summer.

1898 is open Thursday through Saturday. Hours are 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursdays and 6 p.m. until late on Fridays and Saturdays. Walk-ins are encouraged.
