Daytime Carjacking Reported At Fort Sheridan: Blotter

Local man charged with defacing public property; burglars get in garage; shoplifters steal laptop, drugs: Highland Park Police Blotter

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The following information comes from the Highland Park and Highwood police departments and public records as a record of incidents reported to the police and of those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.

INCIDENTS

CARJACKING
Shortly before 1 p.m. on June 22, two men wearing blue surgical masks walked up to a 23-year-old motorist parked in a 2017 Lincoln MKZ. Both men walked up to the driver's side window. One of them knocked on the window and brandished a silver semi-automatic pistol. The driver got out of the car and handed over his cell phone after the carjackers demanded it. The SUV drove away east on Ronan Road. Police said the car was found the next day in Skokie.

HOME BURGLARY
Someone got into an unlocked home in the 3000 block of Chatfield Drive and stole a game console on June 23, either between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. or between 3 and 5:30 p.m.

GARAGE/CAR BURGLARY
A garage door opener left in an unlocked Mercedes in the 1700 block of Wildrose Court allowed one or more burglars to enter residential garage and get into a BMW and an Infiniti parked inside. One of the cars had been moved sideways but nothing was reported missing from inside either car.

ATTEMPTED CAR BURGLARY
Three men in a silver Chevrolet Suburban stopped in the 800 block of Kimball Avenue around 10:15 a.m. on June 26 and tried to open a side compartment in a parked landscaping truck. An employee confronted the thieves, who fled east on Kimball Road toward Green Bay Road. Nothing was reported stolen.

VANDALISM
Someone spray painted a cow sculpture in the 1900 block of Sheridan Road in such a way that it blends together with the cow's artistic design, police learned around 1 p.m. on June 26. The paint matches the description of the graffiti discovered on June 14 that prompted an arrest warrant (see below) to be issued.

SCOOTER THEFTS

  • Someone stole a gray and green Mongoose scooter from a front lawn in the 1500 block of Deerfield Place sometime between 3 and 6:30 p.m. on June 25.
  • An unattended black Phoenix Pilot scooter with blue wheels and handles was stolen between 5:30 and 6:10 p.m. from the northern-most part of the walking path at Open Lands beach.

SHOPLIFTING

  • A female shoplifter wearing a white top, gray pants and a blue shoulder bag was seen on store security video stealing a laptop from the Target at 2099 Skokie Valley Road by placing it into her shoulder bag around 12:38 p.m. on June 22. She was described as between 5 feet, 4 inches and 5 feet, 8 inches tall, 135 to 165 pounds and white.
  • A man with a backpack fled in a black sedan around 7 p.m. on June 25 after stealing about $1,300 worth of allergy medicine from Target, 2099 Skokie Valley Road.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • Someone rummaged through an unlocked Dodge while parked in a driveway in the 1000 block of Windsor Road during the night of June 23 or early morning of June 24. Nothing was reported stolen.
  • An unlocked Porsche was burglarized while parked in a driveway in the 900 block of Ridge Road during the night of June 23 or early morning of June 24. Nothing was listed as stolen at the time of the report.
  • Two unlocked SUVS, a Jaguar and an Audi, parked in a driveway in the 1700 block of Sunset Road were burglarized between 11 p.m. June 25 and 4:50 a.m. June 26. Nothing was reported missing and the vehicles' contents were placed back into their gloveboxes.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Francisco Hammond, 23, of the 100 block of S. Washington Avenue, Naperville, was arrested around 1 a.m. on June 24 and charged with misdemeanor retail theft after police were called to a report of shoplifting at Jewel-Osco, 1600 block of Deerfield Road. Hammond is accused of stealing about $25 worth of merchandise.

John Maillard, 43, of the 600 block of Central Avenue, Highland Park, was arrested around 8:30 p.m. on June 26 and charged with two felony counts of criminal damage to state supported property causing between $500 and $10,000 in damage. A warrant for his arrest was issued following an investigation into bright orange and gold-colored graffiti discovered at about 4 a.m. on June 14 on driveways and public sidewalks in the 400 and 600 block of Central Avenue. No additional information about the nature of the graffiti was immediately available, other than that it was not thought to be related to gang activity.

Susan Crawford, 52, of the 2000 block of Linden Avenue, Highland Park, was arrested at her home around 3:15 p.m. on June 27 and charged with domestic battery following an investigation into an an argument.

Kevin Devine, 47, of the 6800 block of North Ozark Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 11:15 p.m. on June 27 following a traffic stop near the intersection of Skokie Valley and Clavey roads. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater and issued speeding and improper lane usage citations.
