Enhancing Your Not-for-Profit's Development

In support of their grantee organizations, Moraine Township has arranged a free program entitled Enhancing Your Not-for-Profit’s Development to be held on Friday, October 5 from 9:30am to 11:30am at the Highland Park Police Station at 1677 Old Deerfield Road.  Priority registration is reserved for those nonprofit organizations currently serving Moraine Township residents, but the program is open to all area nonprofits if space is available.  RSVP by October 1.  Call the Township office at 847-432-3240 to register.   

The program will be of use to agency Executive Directors, Development staff and Board members responsible for the financial health of their organizations.

Featured speakers are Steve Strang, Nonprofit Programs Manager at the Donors Forum in Chicago and R. James “RJ” Young, Jr., a consultant and Board of Directors member from Executive Service Corps of Chicago.  Sylvia Zaldivar-Sykes, Executive Director of the Lake County Community Foundation, will also speak, introducing the LCCF and its priorities for local funding projects.  In addition, information from and about submitting proposals to a variety of local funders will be available.

Strang’s talk is entitled Tools and Tips for Growing Nonprofit Capacity.  He is expected to address how to utilize the Donors Forum’s resources, including their Library (for researching grantmakers and their priorities), and training programs for nonprofit agency board members and development staff.

Young will introduce attendees to the consulting services of Executive Service Corps as well as focus on Board Development issues.  The ESC provides consulting services by volunteer  business executives on a wide variety of topics, including emergency leadership planning, strategic planning, board and organizational development and assessment, marketing and communications, fund development, financial management, human resources and coaching. 

The Township arranged a similar program four years ago at the suggestion of their Citizen Grant Advisory Committee.  Observing that many local agencies are struggling to make up for lost income in this difficult economy,  “providing another educational opportunity seemed timely and important,” according to Trustee Bryna Gamson, program organizer.  Grant Advisory Chair Judy Datz and member Mark Gilhooley assisted in the planning.

“Even with our generous Grant Program, the Township can’t make up lost revenue for every organization of value to our residents, but we hope to help them help themselves by hosting this program on October 5,” said Supervisor Mari Barnes.
