Fake Salesman Skedaddles With Power Tools: Highland Park Crimes

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The following information comes from the Highland Park Police Department as a record of incidents reported to the police and of those arrested by police. Readers are reminded than an arrest is not an indication of guilt, and criminal charges, which are often dropped or reduced, represent merely accusations by the state. All persons named are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

RETAIL THEFT

On Oct. 23 at 3 p.m., three people stashed multiple bottles of liquor in a backpack and left a business in the 2000 block of Skokie Valley Road without paying for them.

THEFT

Someone stole a purple and silver mountain bicycle from a bike rack in the 400 block of Vine Avenue sometime between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Oct. 26.

BATTERY

A passenger on the Metra train allegedly battered a conductor when an argument escalated to physical contact after the passenger had been asked to leave the train at the Highland Park station, 1700 St. Johns Ave., on Oct. 27 at 10:38 a.m. Highland Park city attorneys were reviewing statements and determining whether to bring charges as of Oct. 31.

THEFT

A purported "tool rep" reportedly filled two shopping carts full of a variety of power tools and walked out of a business in the 1300 block of Half Day Road without paying for any of it Oct. 27 at 5:50 p.m. The thief was caught on security footage and police are currently investigating.

RETAIL THEFT

Someone walked into a business in the 600 block of Central Avenue and walked out with three packages of peach cigarillos on Oct. 28 at 8:29 p.m.

ARMED ROBBERY

An armed robbery was reported at a nail salon by a group of four to five possibly teenaged masked suspects.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Alexander Leverick, 21, of the 1300 block of Ridgewood Drive, was arrested and charged with failure to yield to pedestrian in crosswalk and driving an uninsured motor vehicle after police investigated a traffic accident near Green Bay Road and Chicago Avenue on Oct. 23 at 7:14 p.m. Leverick struck a pedestrian and exchanged information before the person was taken to hospital. When the hospital provided his information to police, they tracked him down and arrested him. In addition to traffic offenses, Leverick was found to be wanted on an outstanding failure to appear warrant from Lake County. Unable to post bond on the warrant, he was transported to bond court in Waukegan.

Dylan Kay, 22, of the 1400 block of Forest Avenue, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, speeding, improper lane usage and failure to signal lane change after being stopped by police in the 200 block of the Edens Expressway on Oct. 28 at 1:48 a.m.

David Jimenez-Rangel, 40, of the 900 block of Deerfield Road, was arrested Oct. 28 and charged with theft of lost or mislaid property after taking a package that had been accidentally left behind on a bench by a train patron in the 1700 block of St. Johns Avenue on Oct. 25.

Tatiana Garcia, 29, of the 3400 block of North Lewis Avenue, Waukegan was arrested on Oct. 30 at 4:46 a.m. and charged with aggravated driving under the influence, driving while license suspended, driving under the influence, speeding, disobeying a red light and uninsured motor vehicle after being stopped by police in the 1300 block of Half Day Road.
