Highland Park Obituary: Domenico Bommarito, 82

Domenico earned a degree from Northwestern and used his knowledge of foreign languages while working for Continental Bank.

Domenico Bommarito of Highland Park, IL peacefully passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2015, at the age of 82 in Highland Park, IL. Oldest son of the late Santina and Giuseppe Bommarito, he is preceded in death by his brother Guido Bommarito. Born and raised in Terrasini (Palermo), Sicily, Domenico met his wife, Graziella, in Sicily and they married in Milan in 1961. In 1957, he received his laureate of Dottore in Lettere from Univerista’ Cattolica Del Sacro Cuore, in Milan, Italy. Domenico and Graziella and their four children moved to Highland Park, Illinois, in 1975 where his mother, Santina, resided. Domenico continued his scholastic vocation in the United States and received a PhD in Medieval Studies in 1978 from Northwestern University. Apart from his passion with regards to history and languages, Domenico worked at Continental Bank from 1976 to 1988 where he used his knowledge and fluency of foreign languages in the international department of the bank. After several years, he resigned from Continental Bank to co-own and operate Eurotile, a home improvement store in Lake Zurich, IL. He exited the business in 1999 and returned to his passion for research and writing, and published many books and articles regarding 16th Century Italian history for the Newberry Library in Chicago, IL., and a number of Italian publishers (including in 2001 Siculorum Gymnasium Facolta’ di Letter e Filosofia Universita’ di Catania, and in 2008 La Controversia in Vallam di Tomaso Schifaldo: Divergenze e Convergenze Grammaticali e Concettuali).
He was the beloved husband of Graziella Bommarito Rappa for more than 50 years; devoted father to his son, Marco; his daughter Miriam and her husband, Dave(Campbell); his daughter, Santina; and his daughter Simona and her husband Jim(Grabowski); fond grandfather of Cristina, Matthew, Joseph, and Luca; dear brother of Marco Bommarito and Maria Grazia Cassabaum and her husband Mike Cassabaum; and dear uncle to Billy and Kathy Bommarito. A visitation will be held on Sunday, January 3, 2016 from 1-5 pm at Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home, 1787 Deerfield Rd, Highland Park, IL. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, January 4, 2016 10:00 am at Immaculate Conception Church, 770 Deerfield Rd. Highland Park, IL. Interment Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Center For Enriched Living, 280 Saunders Road, Riverwoods, IL, 60015.
