Highwood Obituary: Lowell Burt Komie, 87
Lowell served in the U.S. Navy and is a graduate of Northwestern University Law School. He practiced law for 60 years.

Lowell Burt Komie, 87, of Highwood, IL, died Thursday, October 29, 2015. Lowell was born in Chicago, and grew up in Milwaukee and Ravinia, IL. He is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Mary Lou Schwall-Komie, dear children James (Debora), Kay (Wally), and David, cherished grandchildren Matthew, Emily and Dylan, and many beloved friends, relatives, and loved ones. He was the husband of 36 years of the late beloved Helen Jane Komie (nee Voorhorst). He served in the U.S. Navy before settling in Chicago and later Deerfield. Mr. Komie graduated from the University of Michigan and Northwestern University Law School, and was a practicing attorney for over 60 years. He was also an accomplished author, receiving the 1995 Carl Sandburg Literary Award for his short story collection, “The Lawyers Chambers.” A visitation will be held on Sunday, November 8, 2015, at Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home, 1787 Deerfield Road, Highland Park, IL from 1:00 p.m. until time of memorial service 2:00 p.m. Donations may be made to two charities of special significance for Lowell: The United States Holocaust Museum, http://donate.ushmm.org/page/s/tribute-card, which has six of Lowell’s books in the permanent collection of the library, or the Jewish United Fund, http://www.juf.org/donate/default.aspx .
