HPHS Wants to Add More Parking

Enlarging two lots part of District 113's plan to alleviate area congestion.

Township High School District 113 is seeking to add a significant amount of parking options at Highland Park High School to reduce congestion in the nearby residential area and will make up a task force to help formulate a plan at the request of the city.

Plans to expand a 27-space visitor lot to include 115 spaces and include a holding area for vehicles dropping off or picking up students were presented by district officials to the Highland Park Plan Commission on March 17, the Chicago Tribune reports. Enlarging the athletic parking lot north of the high school from 199 to 236 spaces is also part of the plan.

The district first needs to acquire a special use permit change its parking and traffic plans and is seeking significant relief from the density limits of the R5 residential zoning that applies to the property.

As a condition of the special use, the city has asked them to have a task force, which will include high school parents, students and representatives of nearby Indian Trail Elementary School, as well as neighbors living in the vicinity of the high school.
