Featured Obituary:

Kirk C. Hoerman, DDS, MS was born November 26th, 1924 in Lyndon, Kansas to George Hengry and Viola Hoerman. He attended Baldwin University in Baldwin City, Kansas. He played sports there and was named to the university's Hall of Fame. He attended the University of Missouri, Kansas City from where he graduated in 1947 with the degree Doctor of Dental Surgery. From there he entered private practice in Manhattan, Kansas.

Having been drafted during World War II but deferred as he pursued his DDS degree, in 1950 he was commissioned as Lieutenant, U.S. Navy, Dental Corps. His first assignment was aboard USS Fremont (APA 44). He made one deployment to Korea during that conflict. Following his tour on USS Fremont, he was assigned to graduate studies at University of Missouri, Kansas City, where he attained the degree Master of Science in Dentistry in 1955.

From 1955 to 1957 he was assigned as Dental Research Officer, Dental Research Facility, Naval Training Center, Great Lakes Illinois. From 1957 to 1960 he served as head Department of Biochemistry, Naval Medical Research Unit Number 3, Cairo, Egypt. From 1957 to 1960, he served as Head, Department of Biochemistry, Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3, Cairo, Egypt. A true Navy man, Kirk returned from Egypt by ship, where he met Greta. They would spend the next 60 years together. From 1960 to 1969, Kirk served as Head, Chemistry and Physics Division, Dental Research Department, Naval Medical Research Institute, National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland; Head, Research Section, Professional Branch, Dental Division, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Navy Department, Washington, DC; Special Assistant for Dentistry, Office of Naval Research, Medicine and Dentistry Branch, Navy Department, Washington, DC; and Chairman, Research and Education Traineeship Committee, Veterans Administration.

Kirk participated in many professional activities. He was a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists. He was a member of the American Dental Association, Biophysical Society, International Association for Dental Research, and the American Institute of Nutrition. Kirk's major areas of research included protein chemistry, luminescence, hemoglobinopathies, collagen and other connective tissue chemistry. He was awarded several patents and was the author of many articles in those subjects. It was during these years in Bethesda that Kirk and Greta's beloved sons, Thomas, Timothy, Terence, and Tor, were born at U.S. Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Maryland.

From 1969 to 1972, Kirk served as Commanding Officer, Naval Dental Research Institute, Great Lakes, Illinois. Kirk retired from the Navy in 1972 at the rank of Captain. After retirement, Kirk and Greta moved to Lake Bluff, Illinois, then in 1974 they moved to 117 E. Westminster in Lake Forest where they raised their family.

After retirement from the Navy, Kirk worked at the American Dental Association and did consulting work for the William Wrigley, Jr. chewing gum company. He helped patent their first sugarless gum. He was a professor at Loyola University School of Dentistry. During his years in Lake Forest he also had a private dental practice and was one of the first dentists to do dental implants.

In 1994, at age 70, he got his private pilot's license, and bought a plane. He loved people, his home, playing golf, going to his children's athletic games, his vintage Porsche, and an occasional martini with three queen olives. He loved to laugh and laughed at his own jokes and never lost his sense of humor. He loved sports, especially the Cubs and Bears. It was more than an excuse to eat popcorn and drink beer. He loved to share his love of sports with his sons. He would emphatically direct a "You bum!" through the TV when a Chicago sports figure would perform poorly. If you were lucky enough to spend time with him, you know he was tough — but caring and compassionate — lighthearted but thought provoking. He was interested in whatever you brought to the conversation.

Most of all he loved his family, and we, his family, loved him. We love you still, and until we are together again, we wish you "fair winds and following seas."

Kirk is survived by his loving wife Greta Hoerman; his loving children and grandchildren Thomas (Joyce) and their children Megan, Katy, Trent, Tommy and Tanner; Timothy (Carmela) and their daughter Avery; Terence (Grace) and their children Dana, Nadia, and Ray; and Tor (Jessie) and their children Casey, Kirsten and Quinn. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother George Carrol Hoerman.
