Featured Obituary:

Joyce M. Lavengood, age 81, of Skokie and Evanston, Illinois, died Monday, February 24, 2020.

Born in South Bend, Indiana, as the only child of Maurine and Marvin Perkins, she attended Jefferson Grade School, where her father was principal. She graduated from Adams High School, and later, Indiana University, with a degree in Dental Hygiene.

Joyce married Jim Lavengood in 1960. They moved to Evanston, Illinois where she took a position with a prestigious dental practice. The senior dentist had treated President Eisenhower. She had the pleasure and thrill of cleaning the teeth of ambassadors, governors, mayors, CEO’s, and many sports figures, many of whom attempted to give her monetary tips (which she could not accept). Her favorite patient was THE Ronald McDonald, along with Cubs Third Baseman, Ron Santo.

Joyce was popular, because she didn’t preach hygiene. She knew patients had a dislike or fear of dental treatment, so to ease their minds, she exchanged recipes with female patients and talked about hobbies, pets, or sports with male patients. She was always booked solid six months in advance.

She retired earlier than desired due to arthritis in her hands, which robbed her of the strength she needed for a perfect cleaning.

In retirement, she took up gourmet cooking and antique collecting. She also loved to travel with her husband, Jim – around the country and worldwide – but New England was a favorite destination where small country inns were favored over hotels. When in Europe, sleeping in castles was a highlight.

Never having children afforded time and energy to garden and to enjoy her pets. She had two poodles in her retirement years, Bentley and Bonaparte, who gave her joy and companionship while her husband worked many long hours as a graphic designer.

Developing dementia in her late 70’s diminished most of her activities. Her wishes were to remain in her country antique-filled home, where her husband was her sole caregiver.
