Featured Obituary:
If there was one way to describe Evanston native Todd Swenson, it was "consummate family man." Todd was selfless and kind, dedicating his life to making the lives of those around him better through his caring ways, keen sense of humor and infectious grin. He was a loving husband, devoted father of three and great friend to many. On Tuesday, July 18, Todd lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 54.

Todd was born in Chicago in 1963, graduating from Barrington High School in 1981, where he competed in baseball, football and swimming. As one of the top high school swimmers in the state of Illinois, he was offered, and accepted, a swimming scholarship to Iowa State University.
After leaving college, Todd moved to Chicago - the city he loved - embarking on what proved to be a long and successful career with the Chicago Board of Trade where he specialized in soybean trade. He began his career as a “runner” in the volatile area of the exchange known as "the Pit." After mastering the ins and outs of the industry, Todd elevated himself to the role of broker, expertly closing deals between his clients and customers. It was at the Exchange that he met his wife of 25 years, Pam, who worked in Financial Trades.
"Todd was one of the more stand-up guys I ever met in the business," said Thomas Barry, a CBOT trader. "He was a broker with an innate sense of fairness and decency that always served him and his customers very well."
Todd loved Chicago sports – especially his Cubs, Bears, Bulls and Northwestern Wildcats. He, and "best friend" brother Scott, spent countless hours playing "Fantasy" sports. He especially enjoyed watching, and coaching, his three children - Evan, Christian and Ian - in a variety of sports activities, including baseball, basketball, track, cross country, swimming and lacrosse. He also was a strong supporter of Pam, who coaches the Loyola Academy Ramblers girl’s high school basketball team.
“Those who know Todd appreciated that he lived a life that totally revolved around family and friends," Pam said. “Together, we worked to ensure that our children excelled in the classroom and also on the playing field, while also exhibiting character and class."
Evan is about to graduate from the University of Southern California, Christian is a sophomore at Tufts University in Boston, and Ian is beginning his freshman year at the University of Connecticut, where he earned a football scholarship.
Todd was very active in his community, serving on the St. Athanasius School Board, as a coach in soccer, baseball and basketball and chess, and as a swimming referee. His life story, and Tough Like Todd GoFundMe campaign, also were recently featured in Successful Farming Magazine.
Todd leaves behind his beloved wife Pamela Swenson; daughter Evan; sons Christian and Ian; sisters Kerri (John) Hagen; Dawn (Charlie) Lehman; Joan (Chuck) Wafer; Audrey (Peter) McCaughey; brothers Scott (Tammy) Swenson; Rich Swenson (Shelley Wyant); and Carl Swenson and special "mom" Paula Miller and many nieces and nephews. Todd was predeceased by his father, A. Richard Swenson and mother Carolyn Swenson. The whole family also has appreciated the love and support of the Loyola Academy and St. Athanasius communities.
