Featured Obituary:
Richard (Dick) J. Jaeger, 88 of Deerfield passed away peacefully on July 28, 2017. Richard grew up in Skokie and served in the Korean War as Private First Class.

He was married to the “catch of his lifetime” Gertrude Jaeger, nee Schneider for almost 62 years. They settled in Deerfield on what was then a dirt road and raised a family and garden.
As the family grew, so did his garden, sharing the abundance of his labors with neighbors, family and friends. He was known as “The Tomato Man” for his vegetable stand in the front yard and his generosity in the abundance of his large garden.
Jaeger never gave up on perfecting the homemade pickle, lovingly known as Pa’s Pickles. Dick was known for his hearty appetite, somehow food always found its way into every conversation.
Dick was an avid fisherman and rarely passed up the chance to spend time in a boat with a fishing rod in hand.
He made his living as a carpet layer and was an expert woodworker, sharing his expertise building and repairing just about everything for friends and family. He built the 2nd floor addition and the kitchen table large enough for his wife and 12 children.
Richard was as generous with his time and talent as he was with his tomatoes.
He was an active Boy Scout Leader and parishioner at Holy Cross Parish.
Richard was the loving father of 12 children: Cathy (the late Robert) Lapointe, James (Judy) Jaeger, Joe (Carol) Jaeger, Ginny (Joe) Schwalbach, Mary (George) Vollkommer, Ann (Tim) Ryan, Ellen (Ed) Skerke, Margie (Javier) Calderon, Christine (Edward) Rascati, Rick Jaeger, Lorey (Keith) Niesen, Betsy (Paul) Santellano; very proud Pa (Grandfather) of 24 grandchildren: Jay (Lindsey), Paul, Theresa, Sally, Jill, Ellen, Eddie (Marie), Jenna (Patrick), Grace, George, Spencer, Caitlin, Hilary, Max, Carmen, Sergio, Michael, Francesca, Eric, Morgan, Tony, Jake, Noelle, Ceci and “Great-Pa” to Edith and Lincoln.
He was brother to the late Peter (the late Patty) Jaeger, the late Kay (Uno) Larson, John (Barb) Jaeger and Judith (Tom) Hoffman and uncle to many nieces and nephews.Preceded in death by his parents Peter and Helen Jaeger.
A visitation will be held on Sunday July 30, 2017, 2-6 pm at Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home, 1787 Deerfield Road, Highland Park, IL 60035.
A funeral mass will be held on Monday July 31, 2017, 10:00 am at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 724 Elder Lane, Deerfield, IL 60015, with procession to All Saints Cemetery, 700 N River Rd, Des Plaines IL.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Cross Catholic Church, 724 Elder Lane, Deerfield, IL 60015 or Habitat for Humanity Lake County, 315 N. Martin Luther King Jr, Ave. Waukegan, IL 60085.
