Featured Obituary:
Marie Josellis (nee Hoffmann) passed away on July 26, 2020. She was deeply loved by her husband, Manfred Josellis, her sons, Friedrich (Donna), Robert (Colleen) and Ernie (Elizabeth) and her seven grandchildren, Jordan, Jack, Patrick, Connor, Katherine, Elisabeth and Eric Josellis. She was the daughter of beloved parents, Joseph and Katherine Hoffman and sister to the late, Elizabeth Pfann and Katherine Hugel. She is also survived by her brothers-in-law, Horst (Anna) Josellis and Henry Hugel. She was a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Marie’s remarkable life, defined by love and resilience, began on June 17, 1941 in Cernje, Yugoslavia where she was born to her loving mother, an American and her father. In 1945, at the end of WW2 when Marie was just three years old, her family was ripped apart and sent into separate concentration camps. Marie was alone with only her sister Katherine, who was just two years older. In 1948, their plight was brought to the attention of North Dakota U.S. Senator William Langer, who fought to bring them home. Eventually, his efforts were successful and the family returned to Chicago, complete with a photo of the senator and Marie and her family in the Chicago newspapers.
Marie met her husband, Manfred, at a German dance in Chicago. They soon married and had two sons, Freddy and Robert in quick succession, followed by Ernie six years later. She experienced many physical and mental effects from her time in the concentration camps, yet Marie remained a loving wife and mother. She loved to celebrate every holiday, especially Christmas. She loved to get dressed up for dances and spend time at their cherished cottage in Wisconsin, swimming and sledding with her boys.
As their children got older, Marie and Manfred took advantage of Marie’s remarkable cooking skills and purchased the aptly, already named, “Marie’s Restaurant” in Wilmette. It was there that Marie became everyone’s mother with her famous German dishes and her generous helpings. It was a family affair as all of her sons worked at the restaurant at one time or another and Marie held many crying babies and entertained many children so their parents could enjoy their meal.Read more from Donnellan Family Funeral Services »
