Featured Obituary:

L. Stuart Gordon, Jr., age ninety-three, died peacefully after a short illness on March 22, 2020. Born on February 25, 1927, he lived a long and fruitful life. His parents were Leslie S. Gordon and Josephine Bay Duback, long residents of Chicago and Winnetka, Illinois. His grandparents were George W. Duback and Ida B. Duback of Chicago and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Weston-Ritchie of Chicago and Winnetka. Stuart attended Northshore Country Day School and had fond memories of the music department.

As a young man of sixteen, Stuart enlisted in the Navy during World War II. He was training as a Navy fighter pilot when he contracted spinal meningitis. When he recovered, they transferred him to the Navy band. Because of his drumming skills he played in the Navy band to entertain the troops stationed in New Orleans, Louisiana.

After the war he came back to Chicago and continued his lifelong passion of jazz drumming by being a member of various local quartets such as the Pat Conway Band. He retired from drumming at the age of seventy. Besides his love and knowledge of jazz he attended the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Ravinia for classical concerts.

Stuart was married to Joan Alden Bennett and they lived sixty-eight years in Glenview, IL. They were married on September 18, 1948 and they met as teenagers at his parent’s summer home at the Wausaukee Club in Athelstane, Wisconsin. James Ewing Bennett also had a home at Wausaukee where Joan and her twin sister Janet went each summer. They were married for seventy-years before Joan’s death in 2019.

Besides his love for music, he was a proficient pistol and trap shooter. He belonged to the Illinois Rifle Association, National Rifle Association, Northbrook Sports Club, and McHenry Sportsman Club. Stuart competed at Camp Perry, Ohio winning many awards and medals for his fine marksmanship. He was the captain of the Illinois State Pistol team for several years.

Stuart was happiest when he was drinking a martini at Hackney’s on Lake in Glenview, playing his drums, listening to jazz/classical music, target shooting, and sharing Joan’s love for Yorkshire Terriers.
