Featured Obituary:

Mabel Raffay née Winiarz, 98, of Northbrook, died of lymphoma on Monday, October 9th, in Lake Forest, Illinois. She was born in Chicago to Paul and Maryann (Kosh). She grew up in Hegewisch, a Polish neighborhood of Chicago and attended St. Florian Catholic School.

Her professional ambition was to become a Beautician. She graduated from beauty school and worked a few short years as a hairdresser before opening her own salon where she was owner, manager and stylist. She met and married George Raffay in 1936 and they had one daughter, Donna, to whom they were absolutely devoted.

In her younger years Mabel enjoyed playing softball, and was a lifelong Cubs fan who never missed a game. She loved to cook, especially during the holidays and passed down several treasured family recipes. She enjoyed occasional visits to local casinos, and must have been born under a lucky star because she always knew just which slot machine was going to hit. If she could give you advice, it would be "quit while you're ahead."

Mabel was always dressed elegantly for church, family gatherings and special occasions. She wore a hat and high heels and carried herself with a grace and dignity that affectionately earned her the nickname "Queen Mum." She was habitually ready early. Proper manners and being on time were extremely important to her.

Mabel was warm, kind, and had an amazing memory for even the smallest details. She lived her life with a grateful heart, and she would be the first to say that the Lord blessed her again and again. She was a woman whom you could not help but love and admire.

Mabel is survived by her daughter Donna, her two granddaughters Jessica (Brian) and Leslie (Jack) and her four great-grandchildren Anika, Juliet, Caitlin and Andrew. She is preceded in death by her husband George, her brother John, her sister Stella, and her son-in-law Richard. She will be dearly missed by many other friends and relatives.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Mabel's name to The Catholic Charities (Archdiocese of Chicago).
