Featured Obituary:

Alice Mackey née Asher, 77, of Evanston died April 25, 2017, at Evanston Hospital.

Alice Jayne Mackey was born on November 5, 1939, to Marjorie Asher Holland (Edward) and Frank Asher.

Born and raised in Frankfort, Indiana, she graduated as valedictorian and the only African American in her class.

She moved to Chicago to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN-RN), and later, a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree.

She worked at Skokie Valley Community Hospital (now NorthShore University HealthSystem) as Director of Medical Surgical Units and Director of Alcohol and Drug Treatment. She retired in 1983 due to health issues.

Because of her professional accomplishments, the Black Nurses Association established a scholarship in her honor. When Alice, an only child, moved to Evanston, she married Glenn Mackey Sr. They later divorced. From that union, she had three children. Alice leaves to cherish her memory, Glenn Jr. (Glenda), Risa (William Dawson Jr.), and Jeff (Michelle); her grandchildren, Kendall, Janae, Jessica, Lauren, Amanda, and Evan; and a host of nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, loving relatives, and friends.
