Orphans of the Storm to Open in Highland Park

Adoptable cats and dogs will soon make their way to Central Avenue.

Two display windows, one featuring adoptable dogs and the other cats ready for new families, will overlook the 400 block of Central Avenue beginning in October, according to the Daily North Shore.

“If you highlight an animal in a retail environment it makes people say, ‘Wow I didn’t know you could get a pet here.,” Operations Manager Tom Brackney told the DNS.

Animal control officers pick up animals in various nearby cities, quarantines them for 5-7 days and then send them to shelters, including Orphans of the Storm.

Then, the animals are fully vaccinated, spay/neutered and microchipped - allowing those interested in taking the animals home the same day they meet them.

“We go through a series of questions. It’s good to bring in your family to make sure the animals are comfortable around small children. Sometimes we’ll mix up cats and dogs to make sure everyone gets along. We also check with renters to make sure that pets are allowed. The whole process with application takes about a half hour,” Brackney said.

The cost for cats is around $225. Dogs are sold for slightly higher.
