Reconfiguration Plan Not Perfect, But the Best Option: Letter
A Highland Park couple write why they will support the District 112 referendum.

The following letter was written and submitted by Betsy and Scott Lassar.
Ensuring good schools is key for kids and key to the long-term health and vibrancy of our community. That’s why we support the 112 school reconfiguration referendum.
One of the critical factors that drew us to Highland Park when we moved here more than 35 years ago was the confidence that our children would receive an excellent education through the public schools – and they did. As the District has worked over the last four years to develop a proactive plan for the future, we are appreciative and impressed with the open, inclusive and thoughtful process that led to the Board’s recent decision to put the referendum on the ballot. First a citizens advisory committee representing a cross-section of the community was convened to conduct an in-depth analysis of the district’s long-term finances; then another citizens committee conducted a thorough examination of the district’s facility needs, options and related finances.

The bottom line? It is clear that the status quo is not financially sustainable. No plan is perfect, but we believe the proposed reconfiguration is not only the best of all the options but a very good one – both the most cost-effective and the best for ensuring continued educational excellence. Please join us in voting YES!
