HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The following information comes from the Highland Park and Highwood police departments and public records as a record of incidents reported to the police and of those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.

INCIDENTS

THEFT FROM PACKAGE
Two iPhone 13s worth about $2,200 were reported missing from a package that was delivered to the 1800 block of Green Bay Road, police were told on the morning of Feb. 15.

SHOPLIFTING
On Feb. 18, staff at the Target, 2099 Skokie Valley Road, reported that two people had stolen various amounts of over-the-counter medications after stuffing them into their pockets and leaving on Feb. 8.

WALLET THEFT
On Feb. 18, a patron of the Mutual Ace Hardware, 1393 Half Day Road, reported that he had lost his wallet in the parking lot. Officers reviewed surveillance video and determined that a female thief had taken the wallet from the lot and dumped its contents in multiple locations. The wallet was returned to its owner damaged, but nothing of value was reported missing.

SHOPLIFTING
Police were told on the afternoon of Feb. 19 that a man or boy had attempted to return two items to the Guitar Center, 143 Skokie Valley Road, that were later found to have been missing from the store's inventory. He was able to successfully return one item for $42 and left with a beat machine valued at $269 after another, unsuccessful return.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Lucretia L. Daniels, 31, of the 2600 block of Laporte Street in Lake Station, Indiana, and Martrese Skipper, 26, of the 2600 block of South King Drive, Chicago, were arrested around 10 p.m. on Feb. 16 after officers were called to the Ulta Beauty store at 136 Skokie Valley Road for a report of shoplifting. They found Daniels and Skipper in the parking lot and arrested both of them. Daniels was charged with misdemeanor retail theft. Skipper was taken into custody on an active arrest warrant issued by Will County authorities stemming from accusations of retail theft and failing to appear in court.

Juan F. Barajas, 26, of the 200 block of Jeffrey's Place, Highwood, was arrested around 12:30 a.m. on Feb. 20 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater and driving without a valid driver's license following an encounter with police near the intersection of Half Day and Waukegan roads. He was also issued citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, improper display of license plate, no valid registration and no taillights.

Saray Mendez, 34, of the 1200 block of Blackburn Street, Gurnee, was arrested around 5 a.m. on Feb. 20 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater following a traffic stop near Old Elm and Skokie Valley roads. She was also issued a citation for improper lane usage.

Miguel A. Cedillo Velazquez, 24, of the 100 block of Keller Avenue, Waukegan, was arrested around 11 p.m. on Feb. 20 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after he fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed into a road sign in the 2200 block of St. Johns Avenue. He was also issued an improper lane usage citation.

Charles F. Hoffman, 24, of the 200 block of Violet Drive, Romeoville, was arrested around 1 p.m. on Feb. 22 and charged with violation of an active order of protection after he was accused of unlawfully going to a location in Highwood and interacting with a child that a court had forbidden him from contacting.
