Giving Hope, Giving Smiles, Feeding People
When people are in need of food and aren't sure where to go, the food pantry at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Downers Grove are there to help.

It is quite apparent when you talk to the ladies involved with the food pantry at Immanuel Lutheran Church, that it is more than just a bag of groceries people walk away with; they walk away with a smile and with hope. Their compassion and humility are evident when they talk about this “ministry” of love.
Immanuel first opened the “doors” of the food pantry approximately forty years ago. One of they ways they see themselves filling in the “food gap” for individuals and families is that they serve as an emergency food pantry. That means that they provide food that will last a couple of days; long enough for the person to either get to a much larger food pantry or to bridge the gap between paychecks or the once per month Social Security payment.
While talking about the priceless role that food pantries of all sizes play in the community, I asked two of the women involved, what they feel are some of the most important reasons they diligently work to fill in the gap. “The peace of mind we are able to provide to people. Many senior citizens live on a fixed income and this little bit can make a huge difference. There is no reason why anyone in Downers Grove should go hungry! Even if people come on days when the pantry isn’t officially open, we will make sure they walk away with food.” It is easy to believe that when someone in need comes to their door, they will be treated with love and compassion.

Another benefit to the Immanuel food pantry is that people don’t have to fill out any paperwork because there are no residency requirements. They come, they need food, and it is given to them. The generosity of the church members was highlighted as an integral part of the success of the pantry. The first Sunday of each month, specific non-perishable items are requested for donation. Whether it is these monthly food donations or monetary support, this generosity helps the pantry to put food into the hands of people who are in need.
The food pantry operates all year long and is open on Tuesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There are a number of ways that you can support the efforts of the Immanuel Lutheran Church food pantry. If you wish to make a donation of food or money or if you have questions, you can contact Josie Kalmar at (630) 968-3112. The pantry stocks non-perishable items only and it is important that donations are non-expired. If you have items to donate, you can drop them off at the church located at 5211 Carpenter Street in Downers Grove, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. There is always a great need for items like peanut butter and oatmeal.
