Illinois public high school sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible to serve on the SAC. The deadline for applications was May 29 and interviews were held over the summer. The new group will convene in October. Students on the committee typically attend three or four state board of education meetings, which are held in Springfield and elsewhere.
According to ISBE, members of the SAC, which was established in 1975, have demonstrated a strong work ethic and the ability to think creatively and work well in groups. The council shares student concerns and provides feedback on ISBE’s existing and proposed programs, policies and regulations and annually tackles one major issue and presents findings to the state board.

The 2014-15 members of ISBE’s SAC explored a possible statewide program that will demonstrate students’ career technical education skills. In previous years, the council has examined issues related to cyberbullying, mandatory physical education for high school students and high school dropouts.
