Markey comes into District 86 during a time of uncertainty.
Opposed by most of the board, Superintendent Tammy Prentiss is on an undefined "leave of absence." Covino is the acting superintendent.
Markey is joining a district with similar demographics. At Glenbrook North, 4 percent of students come from low-income families, lower than District 86's 10 percent, according to state figures. That compares to nearly half statewide.
Markey received a two-year contract at District 86 with a starting salary of $200,000. That is higher than Covino's salary of $184,140 as of the 2021-22 school year.
Markey earned his bachelor's degree in social science education from the University of Northern Iowa, his master's degree in school leadership from Concordia University and his superintendent licensure from Western Illinois University.
"Jason is an experienced educator and accomplished administrator whose wealth of knowledge, impressive skill set and passion for learning will contribute to the continued growth, development and success of our students," board President Catherine Greenspon said in a District 86 news release.
Markey's first day is July 1.
