There is an increase in the amount of package thefts during the holiday season.

DUPAGE COUNTY, IL — The holiday season usually means an influx of packages sent to doorsteps. It may not be something many think about, but package thefts increase around the holidays. In Downers Grove, two residents had their packages stolen from their front porches. "Porch pirates," as these types of thieves are called, are known to strike during the holiday season when packages are frequently shipped to and from homes.

  • Request a tracking number so that you can monitor the progress of your shipment up to its delivery. Most parcel services have apps or websites that allow you to monitor the package's status via your cell phone or computer.
  • Schedule your delivery beforehand to a set time when you know you will be present for the delivery.
  • Request a signature for the delivery, especially on the big ticket items, such as electronics.
  • Leave a note at the door or include one electronically when ordering an item for delivery advising of where you would want the package left.
  • If you won't be home during a delivery date or time, have it delivered to a neighbor's house or to your workplace, if it is allowed.
  • Some retailers offer the option to have the packages shipped to one of their local stores for pick-up.
  • Install a security system with a camera that overlooks the front door/porch that can give you instant notification via cell phone of deliveries being made, as well as any other activity.
