Butler School students “stepped right up” to the school’s summer “Carnival of Books” challenge, reading an allotted number of books, magazines or online articles.
On Friday (Sept. 18), they celebrated their accomplishments at a school carnival.
“We want to show students that reading is fun and rewarding,” said Principal Melissa Onesto, as she watched students enjoy a variety of carnival games, food and activities in the school gymnasium and cafeteria.

More than 200 students completed the summer reading challenge, fulfilling the reading and writing requirements for their age group.
Students entering grades 1 and 2, for example, were asked to read 10 age-appropriate books or a combination of six age-appropriate books and four magazine/online articles while students entering grades 3 and 4 were challenged to read five age-appropriate books or three age-appropriate books and two magazine/online articles.

Next, they had to pick five book books or articles and complete a fun writing activity for each one, such as predicting what would happen in the book before they actually read it.
“We offer an optional summer reading program to encourage students to read over the summer months,” said Butler Library Media Professional Barb Logsdon. “Every year we have a different theme. Our goal is to encourage the love of reading.”
