Lockport Police Step Up Enforcement For Distracted Driving Awareness Month

LOCKPORT, IL — April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and the Lockport Police Department, along with more than 200 law enforcement agencies across the state, will step up enforcement efforts.

Motorists can expect to see increased patrols and traffic safety enforcement zones throughout April, a news release from police states.

Lockport Police are urging drivers to "drop it and drive" and note that using your phone in anything other than hands-free mode is illegal while driving.

“Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of motor vehicle crashes on our roads
today,” police said in a news release. “During Distracted Driving Awareness Month, law enforcement will boost enforcement efforts, stopping anyone who is texting and driving. Remember, if you have a phone in one hand, you can expect a ticket in the other.”

The Illinois distracted driving campaign is funded with federal traffic safety funds administered by IDOT. The enforcement is a partnership with Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and other local law enforcement agencies, according to a news release.
