Ingalls Advanced Orthopedic Institute Welcomes First Female Orthopedic Surgeon

Samera A. Kasim, D.O., has joined the medical staff at Ingalls Memorial Hospital, and earned the distinction as the first female orthopedic surgeon to become a member of the Ingalls Advanced Orthopedic Institute.

Dr. Kasim will host an educational seminar, “Causes and Treatment Options for Shoulder Pain,” at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Ingalls Family Care Center in Flossmoor. Dr. Kasim will provide an overview of the common causes of shoulder pain, including cervical radiculopathy, tendonitis, rotator cuff tear and arthritis. She will also be discussing which tests are helpful in making a proper diagnosis, and cover both non-operative and operative treatment options. In addition, guests will have the opportunity to ask questions.

Dr. Kasim earned her doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from University of North Texas Health Science Center, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Midwestern University in Downers Grove and an upper extremity fellowship at San Francisco Shoulder, Elbow and Hand Clinic.

Dr. Kasim specializes in treating sports injuries and arthritis problems that involve the shoulder and elbow. Her work at San Francisco Shoulder, Elbow and Hand Clinic focused on the treatment of athletes and active patients using minimally invasive techniques, including arthroscopy.

Dr. Kasim is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Medical Association. When she’s not seeing patients, Dr. Kasim enjoys running, participating in triathlons, traveling and cooking.
