Business Profile: Karen Scobbie Cake Design

Karen Scobbie's decadent and sophisticated cakes transform dreams into a realities.

How long have you been in business? 

I’ve been renting space in  since November 2010 but I’ve been making cakes for seven years. 

What inspired you to become a cake designer? 

While working in the financial industry for 17 years,  a friend and I decided to take a cake decorating course to step up the presentation of the birthday cakes we were making for our co-workers. The response was so great that I just kept going with it. 

What are your specialties?

My specialty is translating what people are passionate about into cake and high-quality gourmet wedding cakes. 

What's you favorite type of cake to construct? 

I love to make challenging cakes with structure or armature.

What advice would you give someone who was interested in learning how to design cakes for themselves?

The Wilton School of Cake Decorating & Confectioners Art has a very structured program. Also, many famous cake designers are teaching classes now and they will tell you all their secrets.

What was it like being on the winning team on TLC's "Ultimate Cake Off," and would you ever do a competition show like that again? 

TLC’s "Ultimate Cake Off" was an incredibly intense and fun experience and I would love to do another competition show. 

Any upcoming events or specials? 

Look for my cupcakes in the Mama & Me Pizzeria booth at Homewood Days and I will be appearing in a segment of a show called “Extreme Christmas Trees” on TLC in December.  I will be assisting on the same team from “Ultimate Cake Off” to create a 10 foot Christmas tree with edible decorations. 

Where are your favorite places to eat and shop locally? 

I eat at  a lot (love the sausage pizza and their meat balls).  I also enjoy , , J&T Sausage Co.,  and .  is a favorite along with , and .
