Chicago's Underwater Archaeology

Chicago's Underwater Archaeology

Event Details

Irwin Community Center & Irwin Park, 18120 Highland Ave, Homewood, IL, 60430

Come along with Chicago Maritime Museum (CMM) curator Madeline Crispell for a "deep dive" into the history of underwater archaeology in the Chicago area and Great Lakes.

Once the busiest maritime port in the country, Chicago had more ship traffic than New York City, San Francisco, and New Orleans combined. This legacy may be best reflected under the waters of Lake Michigan, via the shipwrecks and other artifacts surveyed by organizations like the Underwater Archaeological Society of Chicago. Hear about the many shipwrecks off the coast of Chicago, see some of the artifacts in CMM's collection, and learn why Illinois may have a less robust maritime archaeology program than our peer Great Lakes states.

This event is free and open to the public. Please join us for light refreshments before the program.
