Fox-Owning Couple Trashed Apartment: Lawsuit
The couple was only allowed to have a pet bird, according to their lease.
A fox-owning couple trashed their apartment and left it stinking of “animal excrement” even though they were allowed to keep nothing more than a bird as a pet, according to a lawsuit filed in Will County court.
Jordan Luna and Christine Mathisen not only had a pet fox, but also kept “multiple birds and cats” in the Monee apartment, the lawsuit said.
Their lease, which was included in the court file, specified that they were only supposed to have a single bird.

When landlords Donald and Diane Stender found out about all the animals in September, they served Luna and Mathisen with a 10-day notice that their tenancy was terminated. Luna and Mathisen were out by Nov. 15, the suit said, but the Stenders then discovered “extensive damage apparently caused by the animals kept by (the tenants), misuse and neglect including but not limited to odor from animal excrement, damage to window casements, carpet, flooring, cabinets and drywall, heavily soiled appliances and two broken windows.”
The Stenders want to Luna and Mathisen to pay $14,493.84, plus costs and fees.
