Gimme 5: Golf Caddy Wallace Heads to Miami on Evans Scholarship

Homewood-Flossmoor graduate Michael Wallace culminates five years of hard work at Flossmoor Country Club by being selected for prestigious scholarship award.

All those years of waking up early on weekends and in the summer before many of his fellow classmates even dreamed of getting up paid off in a very big way for Homewood native Michael Wallace.

The recent Homewood-Flossmoor High School grad found out this spring he was one of the select few chosen to receive the prestigious Evans Scholarship award. The award allows Wallace to attend college tuition-free.

Wallace was hoping to attend Miami of Ohio, and that is exactly where he will be heading this fall. He plans on studying micro-biology in hopes of going into pre-med. He had mixed emotions waiting to find out if he was going to be awarded an Evans Scholarship.

“I had a good feeling up until about February when I still hadn’t heard and knew the latest I could find out was in March,” Wallace said.

When he finally received an acceptance letter in the mail and tore it open, it was instant jubilation.

“My family was there with me when I opened it," Wallace said. "When I saw I was accepted, we all starting crying."

Wallace caddies at Flossmoor Country Club and credits a family friend for getting him started.

“A good friend of the family was a member there, and he suggested I try it," Wallace said. "I fell in love with it."

Wallace's dream foursome would include newly crowned U.S. Open champ Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan.

As Wallace reflects on his time at Flossmoor Country Club, he has nothing but great respect for all of those who helped him reach this point in his life.

“This place has done so much for me, from the top person all the way down the line,” Wallace said. “They were a great help during the Evans process.”
