Gimme 5: H-F's Lewers Looks to Carry Vikings in State Playoffs

Senior standout wants to experience the thrill of a return trip downstate.

Homewood-Flossmoor girls soccer standout Kelly Lewers has done it all for the Vikings during the regular season, scoring a team-high 40 goals.

But now the state playoffs are here, she and her teammates hope to do some damage.

After an early exit in the regional finals to Stagg in last year, the Vikings are looking to bounce back and make a deep run, much like during Lewers' freshman season when H-F advanced to the state quarterfinals.

"I would consider the season a success if we advance farther than we did last year," Lewers said.

She credits the Vikings' trip to Burlington, Iowa, with helping the team bond and helping H-F prepare to face tough competition.

Lewers has played soccer since she was a youngster. And she will continue to play after she leaves the Vikings. She has earned a scholarship to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

One of the two losses the Vikings had during the regular season was to Sandburg, a team Lewers would like to see again, and she might get her wish. The two powerhouses are on collision course for a sectional final matchup.
