Gimme 5: H-F's Shereyk Only Has Scratched the Surface
Sophomore provided clutch hitting during the Vikings' surprise run to 4A regional title. She hopes to blossom into a team leader next season.
Homewood-Flossmoor softball player Kate Shereyk keeps getting better as she gets older, which is a good thing for the Viking program as she still has two years left of high school.
Shereyk belted seven home runs this season and helped guide H-F to a regional title. She has played on the varsity team throughout both of her first two years of high school. And she has been playing softball since she was 8 years old.
She started playing at Izaak Walton in Homewood and climbed her way up to the travel league ranks. One of the main reasons Shereyk continues to get better is that she challenges herself.

“It is a lot harder playing on the travel team, but I like doing that to help me get a competitive edge rather than just playing for leisure," she said.
It appears Shereyk and first-year H-F coach Katie Rice-Hoger are a good match for each other as they both like to push the envelop, push to make strides on and off the field.

“She is more emotional than our last coach,” Shereyk said. “She gets into the game and pushes us harder.”
Shereyk feels teammates would describe her as happy, energetic and always smiling. As for what she hopes to improve on for next year, she said she wants to take on more of a leadership role.
“I want to be a leader, pushing everyone else and also someone to look up to,” Shereyk said.
