Sports Video Highlight Reel: H-F Dealt a Bum Hand of Crazy Eights

Despite being tied going into the bottom of the third inning against Sandburg, the Vikings gave up eight runs in the fifth and dropped an 11-1 decision in a softball matchup of the Southwest Suburban Blue rivals.

After three innings, the Homewood-Flossmoor softball team looked like it was ready to give Sandburg a run for its money. But things fell apart in the fifth inning as the Eagles exploded for eight runs and went on top top the Vikings 11-1 in a matchup of Southwest Suburban Blue rivals.

Junior starting pitcher Sarah Burke looked to be locked in early against Sandburg as she knocked the Eagles down 1-2-3 in the first and got out of a bases load jam in the second with a clutch strikeout. Senior Jessica Markanich got the Vikings on the board in the third as she drove in Adrienne Contreras with a hot grounder that squirted through the legs of the Sandburg shortstop tying the score at 1-1. But that was all the offense H-F would muster.

After holding Sandburg to three runs on five hits through four innings, Burke and the Vikings were bombarded in the fifth as Sandburg strung together hit after hit to score seven runs, which brought the score to 10-1. Then, Burke's first pitch to Sandburg senior Jess Perkins was smashed over the center field fence to bring the Eagles' lead to 11-1, ending the ballgame.
