Straight Out of Juvie, Right into High School
Accused teen-aged carjacker released from detention so he can attend high school.

A 17-year-old arrested after an attempted carjacking in Homewood earlier this month is out of juvenile detention, but only so he can attend high school.
A judge ordered the minor’s release after his mother showed proof he had been enrolled in an area high school. He’ll be allowed to attend as long as he wears an electronic monitoring device. He’ll have to come straight home after school, and check in about his whereabouts every night, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office has required.
The teen is charged with attempted armed robbery and attempted vehicular hijacking following the Sept. 10 incident, which occurred about 11 p.m. in the 18600 block of Klimme Avenue. The juvenile and a cohort flashed a gun in the face of an off-duty cop in an attempt to steal his car.

The officer fired his gun and chased the duo. The defendant was caught at Millennium Park; the accomplice has not yet been apprehended.
Assistant State’s Attorney Clyde Guilamo argued in court that it wasn’t the first time the teen had been tied to crime— two of which were armed robberies that took place in 2014, both involving handguns. He was not prosecuted for those instances, reports HF Chronicle.

Both prosecution and defense agreed the minor had not been the one holding the gun in the attempted carjacking earlier this month.
He will next appear in Markham juvenile court on Oct. 27.
