The state of Illinois created the sex offender registry to help citizens monitor where people convicted of sexual crimes live. Use the list to be more aware of what goes on in your neighborhood.
Do you know if you live near a registered sex offender? You should check out the sex offender registry. In addition, though, to give you an idea of the number of registered sex offenders who might be living near you, we charted and mapped out the Illinois counties with the most, and fewest, registered sex offenders per capita. See if your county made either list.

The sex offender database is run by the Illinois State Police, but all levels of law enforcement can play a role in the apprehending of sex offenders. That includes local police departments, some of which have a woefully underfunded pension system. You can find out which police, and fire departments, have the worst underfunded pensions bychecking out our chart here.
