How much are you paying in sales taxes compared to your neighboring cities and counties?

It’s hard to believe some states don’t have a sales tax, especially if you live in Illinois, which is ranked 10th in the nation for highest combined state and average local sales tax.
The statewide sales tax is 6.25 percent, but counties and municipalities can levy their own on top of the state rate. And it’s probably not much of surprise that most cities with the highest sales taxes are in the greater Chicagoland area. Here are the 13 Illinois cities that have the highest sales taxes. You can also see the rates in the state’s 25 largest municipalities. And if you didn’t see your city on either of these lists, there is a sortable data table with each city’s sales tax you can check.
